Environmental Noise Assessment
A proposed development will often require assessment of the potential to disturb neighbours. This covers a wide range of planned activities but examples are:
The assessment is usually done following BS4142: Method for rating industrial noise affecting mixed residential and industrial areas. This compares the anticipated noise of the proposed development with the existing background noise. From this the level of complaints is indicated. The more the noise from the proposed development will be above the current background noise level the higher the likelihood that neighbours will complain.
To make the assessment it is necessary to calculate the noise of the proposed development, and to measure the existing background noise levels. The latter is usually done over a period of at least an hour however longer measurements will give an indication of the variability of the background noise levels. The measurements must be collected in calm, dry conditions.
We now work to BS4142:2014 as this has recently been comprehensively revised.
